According to CoinGecko, trading volumes crashed by around 39% in the first quarter alone. The total market value of all digital coins currently stands at USDtn 2.2, just under half the peak reached at the end of 2025. Even established crypto stocks suffered: the dramatic slumps in prices and turnover were accompanied by a heavy sell-off affecting companies such as Strategy, the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin owner, and even the crypto exchange Coinbase. Experts are seeing the first signs that the trend is bottoming out, however. In the latest “The Bitcoin Quarterly” report from ARK Invest, the US asset manager reckons that sellers may be running out of steam. For the first time, the proportion of Bitcoin holdings being traded at a loss exceeded those traded at a profit. June also brought some relief with surprisingly low US inflation figures, giving the Federal Reserve a little breathing space and dampening interest rate expectations. This combination could herald the end of the crypto bear market.

Digital innovation

Meanwhile, blockchain, the technology behind crypto assets is showing no signs of fatigue. Far more than just Bitcoin and the like, blockchain is, at heart, a decentralised, immutable digital ledger in which transactions are cryptographically encrypted, bundled into blocks and stored as a chain. Each participant receives a copy, ensuring that manipulation is virtually impossible. This structure makes the technology interesting above and beyond cryptocurrency applications because it can, for instance, serve as a secure database in finance, supply chain management or healthcare. With the introduction of smart contracts – autonomously executable digital agreements – blockchain has opened up even more fields. Examples include automated payments and tamper-proof registers. Blockchain has long since ceased to be a niche product, then – it has become a key infrastructure for more and more industries.

Glittering growth prospects

The industry’s forecasts are correspondingly optimistic. Fortune Business Insights puts the global blockchain market for 2026 at about USDbn 47.96 and sees it expanding to USDbn 577.36 by 2034. That is equivalent to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 36.5% p.a. This enormous potential is being driven by rising digitalisation and the trend towards the tokenisation of real assets. Conglomerates and start-ups are investing huge amounts because blockchain can stimulate innovations such as decentralised identities, IoT security and digital currencies. Many industries are already running pilot projects looking at ideas extending from the traceability of food through energy trading to the automated processing of insurance claims. With a share of more than 40%, the USA currently dominates the blockchain market on a regional view.

Everything in one package

In the long term, therefore, the technology is likely to continue to gain in importance, even if – as just seen – it can experience short-lived price volatility. Investors are thus strongly advised not to rely on a single crypto asset, but instead to add a broadly diversified equity exposure to their portfolio in order to participate in the possible recovery of the crypto market. Swissquote designed such an index as long ago as August 2021. The Swissquote Blockchain Index currently contains 19 international companies which are engaged in the blockchain economy, such as crypto mining, crypto exchanges and software.

Global blockchain market

Source: Fortune Business Insights
